What shall I wear to my tattoo appointment?

A question we get asked a lot, what shall I wear to my tattoo appointment? or a consideration that gets completely forgotten about in the excitement. We have put together a guide as to appropriate clothing to ensure maximum comfort and coverage for you as well as access for the artist.

What to wear to your tattoo appointment

what shall I wear to my tattoo appointment? - Consider placement

There are many factors to take into consideration before getting your tattoo. The outfit that you choose to wear should largely depend on the area that you are getting tattooed. We have put together the guide below to help you determine the type of clothing that will be both comfortable & appropriate for your appointment, we have listed these by area below. But first there are some general considerations as to your outfit choice For any appointment.

Firstly comfortable clothing is a must, your body will be in distress and uncomfortable restrictive clothing will not help you relax. Another consideration is layers, throughout your appointment your temperature will fluctuate so its a good idea to be prepared to adapt to your body's temperature. further to this and we see this a lot in our studio is avoid wearing your favourite clothing or light colours, the last thing that you want is to get ink or blood on your favourite outfit, wearing something dark or you don't mind staining is a very good idea.

What to Wear When Getting a Back Tattoo

Depending on how big the tattoo is on your back, a loose comfy low backed top is a good choice. Especially for small tattoos right at the top or right at the bottom of your back. For bigger and full back tattoos, we always recommend wearing a button up shirt or zip up hoodie backwards to maintain your modesty in front. some other ideas for bigger back tattoos include; cutting an old t-shirt up the middle at the back, so it can easily be moved whilst being fully covered at the front. Another option is a bikini top which can be undone at the back whilst being tattooed. It all depends on how comfortable you are with how much skin your are showing and of course the temperature at the time of your tattoo appointment.

What to Wear When Getting a Thigh/Hip/butt Tattoo

When getting a thigh or hip tattoo we recommend wearing comfortable loose shorts that can easily be moved, whilst maintaining your modesty whilst being tattooed. Another option is long loose maxi dresses, which can be moved easily out of the way and can be used to cover yourself during the appointment. The worst thing that you could wear to this appointment are tight trousers or jeans and end up having to sit in your underwear or having to reschedule your appointment.

What to Wear When Getting a Shoulder/neck Tattoo

For a shoulder or neck tattoo a cami top, boob tube or a tank top is a good choice. Again, make sure its nice and loose for a cami or tank top so it does not pull and distort the skin being tattooed and can easily be moved if need.

What to Wear When Getting a Sternum/side-boob/CHEST Tattoo

For either of these you are going to want to go braless and you will be asked to put paper towel or nipple pasties over your nipples for extra coverage for your modesty and comfort. A nice loose flowy top is perfect for this type of appointment. For a side-boob tattoo a bikini top is a great choice as it can be undone and moved whilst still giving your coverage.

what to wear when getting a leg tattoo

for a leg tattoo again you are going to want to either wear shorts or loose trousers that can easily be adjusted to access the area that is being tattooed. Jeans or tight trousers again are a bad idea (nobody wants to get stuck sitting in their undies for a calf or knee tattoo or asked to reschedule).

what to wear when getting an arm tattoo

for an arm tattoo, depending on whether it is lower or upper arm, you are going to be wanting a loose t-shirt, cami or tank top for this appointment to enable full access to the area. AGAIN AVOID YOUR BEST CLOTHES AND LIGHT COLOURS.
